The present investigations were undertaken to evaluate the effect of Rhizobium leguminosarum on quality of substrates and productivity of Pleurotus eryngii. Among the different concentrations (2, 4, and 6 ml) of R. leguminosarum tested on wheat grain substrate for vegetative growth of P. eryngii, 2 ml concentration resulted in increased mycelial growth of P. eryngii. Supplementation of substrates (wheat straw and maize cobs) with 20 ml concentration of R. leguminosarum at the time of spawning resulted in a reduction of days required for spawn run and pin head formation as compared to the untreated bags. The amendment of substrates with R. leguminosarum improved the physico-chemical properties of the spent mushroom substrates. The nutritional quality of the fruit bodies significantly increased after the application of R. leguminosarum in the substrates.
